World Contraception Day: Experts Call For Increased Awareness To Curb Unsafe Abortion

As Nigeria joins the rest of the world to observe the World Contraception Day, experts have called for urgent action on unwanted and underage pregnancies to check the rising rate of unsafe abortion in the country.
They​ gave the warning in a statement jointly issued on Wednesday.
The Programme Director of Development Communications Network (Devcoms), Akin Jimoh, noted that the majority of young people in Nigeria are not empowered with quality information to make informed decisions about their reproductive health.

In Ebonyi State, birth control is one sure way to tackle the challenge. That was why  Governor Dave Umahi launched the Resources for the Awareness of Population Impacts on Development or RAPID.
 
Umahi’s administration believes a controlled population is easier to manage in the face of limited resources.

‘Stop Contraceptive Stock-Out To End Unplanned Pregnancies’

Worried by stock-out of contraceptive commodities and consumables, experts at the Performance Monitoring and Accountability (PMA) 2020, a recent family planning (FP) review, advocated increased funding for FP by state governments.
 
In view of high incidence of unplanned pregnancies, Funmi Olaolorun, the Co-Principal Investigator, PMA 2020, stressed that increased funding by state governments would  tackle  stock-out of contraceptive commodities and consumables in many states.
 

A-Ibom, AHI partner to scale up family planning method

Akwa Ibom State Government has expressed its readiness to partner Action Health Incorporated, AHI, to scale up an injectable family planning method, Depot Medroxy Progesterone Acetate-SC (Sayana Press), in the state.
 
Speaking at a consultative meeting of stakeholders in Uyo, the state Commissioner for Health, Dr. Dominic Ukpong, said the observed strong preference by many women of reproductive age in the state to Sayana Press informed the need to sustain and scale up the project.
 

Population disaster: NPC advises families to adopt birth control

The Chairman, National Population Commission (NPC), Eze Duruiheoma (SAN), has advised families to adopt birth control measures to avert population disaster and harness demographic dividend in Nigeria.
 
Mr. Duruiheoma gave the advice on Tuesday in Abuja while briefing newsmen as part of the activities to commemorate the 2017 Annual Population Lecture Series (APLS) scheduled to hold on October 30.
 

Gynaecologist urges Nigerians to control child bearing amid recession

Prof. Suleiman Adeniran of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH), has advised parents to consider family planning to ease the effects of economic recession.
 
Adeniran gave the advice in Ilorin on Friday, January 8, during a presentation at a UITH Seminar on: "Economic Recession: A healthy way out."
 
The gynaecologist described family panning as a concept or programme of limiting the size of families through spacing or prevention of pregnancies, especially in times of economic recession.
